Version 1.1 of the Handbook of Responsible Partnering has been released. This revision brings the Handbook
up-to-date without fundamentally changing the principal recommendations. Information on State aid has been added and the section on human aspects of effective collaborative research extended. There is a new checklist for all types of organisation interested in implementing the guidelines, and a more detailed list for situations involving the supervision and training of PhD candidates.
When the Handbook was first released, the consequences of global, open approaches to science and innovation were only starting to become apparent. A major benefit of Responsible Partnering has been the significantly increased appreciation of the issues involved in the development of long term strategic partnerships. Alongside this increased experience and understanding, major policy initiatives have been launched to establish and strengthen the European Research Area through collaboration. The success of these initiatives depends upon what happens at "grass roots" level, and this is where the Handbook is aimed.
